Artist Statement

My practice explores how existence is revealed and perceived. For me, the city is not merely a subject but a site through which these questions can be examined. Rather than a fixed landscape, the city is a space where multiple gazes, temporalities, and relationships intersect, continually shaping and reshaping our perception of reality. The landscapes we encounter are not objective representations but constructions formed through memory, experience, and perception.

My work begins by deconstructing and reconstructing images of the city. Architectural elements such as windows, light, structures, and surfaces function not as descriptive motifs but as visual languages through which invisible relationships and modes of existence can emerge. Through repetition, layering, fragmentation, and displacement, familiar urban images are transformed into spatial fields where multiple perspectives and temporalities coexist.

In recent works, my practice has expanded beyond painting into installation and sculpture. The Witnessed Witness examines the shifting relationship between the observer and the observed, while Dustlight investigates the ways in which existence appears and disappears through artificial light. Although these works employ different media, they are connected by the same inquiry: how can invisible structures and forms of existence become perceptible?

For me, painting is not a means of representing reality but a process of making the invisible visible. Through the city as both a conceptual framework and a spatial device, I seek to reveal that what we perceive as a singular reality is, in fact, a landscape continuously shaped by overlapping perspectives, temporalities, and experiences.

나는 존재가 어떻게 드러나고 인식되는가에 관심을 둔다. 나에게 도시는 그 질문을 탐구하기 위한 대상이자 장치이다. 도시는 단순한 배경이나 풍경이 아니라 수많은 시선과 시간, 관계가 중첩되며 존재가 끊임없이 생성되고 변화하는 공간이다. 우리가 바라보는 풍경은 객관적인 실체가 아니라 감각과 경험, 기억이 교차하며 구성되는 인식의 결과이다.

작업은 도시의 이미지를 해체하고 다시 연결하는 과정에서 시작된다. 건물의 창과 빛, 구조와 표면은 도시를 재현하기 위한 요소가 아니라 보이지 않는 관계와 존재를 드러내기 위한 조형적 언어이다. 반복과 중첩, 분절과 이동을 통해 동일한 이미지는 끊임없이 다른 모습으로 나타나며, 하나의 고정된 풍경은 다양한 시점과 시간, 감각이 공존하는 다층적인 공간으로 전환된다.

최근 작업은 회화를 넘어 설치와 조각으로 확장되었다. 목격된 목격자〈The Witnessed Witness〉에서는 바라보는 자와 바라보이는 자의 관계를, 사라지며 드러나는〈Dustlight〉에서는 빛을 통해 존재가 드러나고 다시 사라지는 인식의 과정을 탐구한다. 서로 다른 형식을 취한 작업들은 모두 보이지 않는 존재와 구조를 어떻게 경험하고 지각할 수 있는가라는 동일한 질문으로 연결된다.

나에게 회화는 현실을 재현하는 매체가 아니라, 보이지 않는 것을 가시화하는 사유의 과정이다. 나는 도시라는 공간을 통해 존재와 인식의 관계를 탐구하며, 우리가 하나의 현실이라 믿는 세계가 사실은 수많은 시선과 시간, 경험이 중첩되어 형성된 풍경임을 회화로 드러내고자 한다.
