〈Cut & Layer — Rewriting the Surface〉

그동안 나는 반복되는 빛과 배열을 통해 화면을 조직해 왔다. 색의 밀도와 구조는 공간을 하나의 안정된 체계로 구축했고, 표면은 균형 잡힌 질서로 완결되었다. 그러나 그 완결성은 동시에 더 이상의 개입을 허용하지 않는 닫힌 상태이기도 했다.

 

〈Cut & Layer — Rewriting the Surface〉는 그 표면을 다시 열기 위한 시도이다. 채색된 종이를 자르고, 파편을 겹치고, 다시 배열하는 과정은 이미 형성된 구조를 유지하는 대신 그것을 해체하고 재구성하는 행위에 가깝다. 화면은 더 이상 단일한 이미지로 완성되지 않으며, 절단과 적층의 반복 속에서 새로운 관계를 형성한다.

 

동일한 형식을 반복하되, 밀도와 간극, 두께의 차이는 각기 다른 긴장을 만든다. 선택과 우연, 물질의 반응은 표면을 끊임없이 수정하며, 질서를 고정된 체계가 아닌 진행 중인 상태로 남긴다. 여기서 표면은 결과가 아니라 시간의 축적이 남긴 흔적이며, 잘리고 겹쳐진 층위들은 구조가 생성되는 과정을 드러낸다.

 

이번 전시는 완성을 제시하기보다, 다시 쓰이는 화면의 상태를 보여준다. 표면은 더 이상 닫힌 구조가 아니라, 반복되는 개입 속에서 계속해서 갱신되는 장이 된다.

 

For years, my work has organized the pictorial field through the repetition of light and its arrangement. The density of color and its internal order constructed space as a stable system, and the surface arrived at a state of balanced completion. Yet that very sense of completion also marked a closed condition—one that no longer allowed further intervention.

 

〈Cut & Layer — Rewriting the Surface〉 is an attempt to reopen that surface. Cutting colored paper, overlapping fragments, and rearranging them is less about maintaining an already formed order than about dismantling and reconfiguring it. The image no longer resolves into a singular, unified whole; instead, it forms new relations through the repeated acts of cutting and layering.

 

While the same formal framework is reiterated, variations in density, interval, and thickness generate different tensions. Choice and chance, along with the material’s own responses, continually revise the surface, leaving order not as a fixed system but as a state in progress. In this sense, the surface is no longer a final result but a trace of accumulated time, where the cut and layered strata reveal the process through which structure comes into being.

 

Rather than presenting a finished resolution, this exhibition shows the condition of a surface being rewritten. The pictorial field is no longer a closed structure but a site that is continuously renewed through repeated acts of intervention.
